This book is a collection of the late paintings of Vincent Van Gogh mixed in with a few earlier pieces. It is prefaced with a brief biographical sketch. Close to 100 paintings are reproduced in vivid colors and are classified into six sections. Van Gogh's masterpieces cover three main themes: landscapes, portraits and flowers. Many of the paintings are immediately recognizable as the work of Van Gogh, while others do not immediately reveal themselves as his work to the uninitiated.

At the beginning of each chapter are quotations from the letters of Van Gogh. These letters are invaluable to art historians because of the insight they provide to Van Gogh's creativity, his ideas for compositions and his use of color. There are also three portraits of Van Gogh painted by three friends, Toulouse-Lautrec, Gauguin and Russell.

Some of Van Gogh's paintings are valued as the most expensive in the world. In 1990, his portrait of Dr. Gachet sold for $82.5 million.
