The Colour of Lies is set in the North West of England: in the magical Saddleworth villages in the old West Riding of Yorkshire known for their wonderful Whit Friday Brass Band contests; in the tiny Cheshire village of Styal home to the National Trust Quarry Bank Mill; and in nearby Wilmslow and Alderley Edge, the champagne capital of the country.

The renewed city centre of Manchester, the Salford Quays on the site of the old inland port of the River Mersey, and the fashionable south Manchester suburb of Didsbury also feature together with a local council estate.
