Into Laos: The Story of Dewey Canyon II / Lam Son 719: Vietnam 1971

Nolan presents the complex story in its many-sided aspects. By following the action from the points of view of the individuals, previously neglected angles of the conflict are dramatized. We learn more about the special role of three specific Army battalions; about the defense of Khe Sahn, and about the struggle to clear Route 9. The press reported Operation Dewey Canyon II as a defeat, and to the casual observer this may have seemed true. However, Nolan's account presents the operation in a different light. From the point of view of thousands of Americans who fought there, Nolan's view may well be legitimate. Thoroughly researched, written with fire and passion, the author has outdone his performance in Battle For Hue. The canvases larger, the author's hand more expert, and the situation more varied.
