Gustav Klimt was born on July 14, 1862. He was a Symbolist painter that was part of the Vienna Secession movement. He studied at Vienna School of Arts and Crafts under a scholarship. Under his training, his early style was considered as academic. In 1880, Klimt began working with his brother, Ernst and a friend, Franz Matsch, they had many successful commissions. Gustav was recognized with many merits and honorary memberships over the years.
In 1892, both Klimt’s father and brother, Ernst, died. This tragedy led Gustav to taking over the financial responsibilities for both families and ultimately his style changed. He became one of the founding members of the Vienna Secession in 1897. Gustav continued to paint on commission, with his style becoming more provocative as he progressed. Some of his most popular work came during this period; The Kiss and Adele Bloch-Bauer. Klimt worked from his home, where he was secluded and concentrated on his art and the Secessionist Movement. He died on February on 6, 1918 during the influenza epidemic.
