Description

This book is intended principally for caregivers of patients about to undergo vitrectomy surgery followed by a face-down recovery at home.
It also provides information valuable to vitrectomy surgeons and their staffs, other medical practitioners, equipment providers, relatives and friends.
Focus is equipment and techniques that will benefit the patient’s comfort and compliance with their surgeon’s instructions. Where better equipment is not available, the recommendation is toward that which is available, or can easily be fabricated.
All of the types of equipment generally advertised as vitrectomy recovery equipment are addressed, along with and their s notable strengths and weaknesses, and where they are adjustable, explanations of how each can be adjusted, In addition, instructions are provided to allow craft-level fabrication of items often considered too expensive, or which can easily be modified to improve comfort and to avoid injury.
Techniques include several which facilitate compliance with a surgeon’s instructions to maintain the patients head in a face-down position and to restrict their eye movement. An innovative concept for the lattermost is introduced.
Emphasis is directed toward practices which maximize the comfort of the patient and which make time in their face-down position appear to move more quickly.
Much of the book is based upon the experience of the author providing care for his wife who underwent a vitrectomy surgery followed by a two week face down recovery including attempting to restrict her span of vision to 15 degrees.
The book includes 30 custom illustrations.
