About The Book

Although efforts are made to provide and protect the rights of citizens in respect of livelihood, food, shelter, education and basic services, there are serious gaps in the plans of inclusive growth and actual delivery, which make way for informal cities. This book addresses the issues concerning the urban poverty and its manifestation in the form of informal city. Looking at the ongoing practices, perceptions, plans and programmes based on participatory learning process, it analyses various inter-related aspects of growth and poverty alleviation, viz-a-viz the problems of housing, basic infrastructural services, transport, micro-credit and public health. Based on an in-depth analysis, it suggests strategies for inclusive and empowered informal sector.

About The Author

A.K. Jain, an architect-town planner, is on the Advisory Board of the UN-Habitat (HS-Net). He studied at Delhi School of Planning and Architecture, Institute of Housing and Urban Development Studies, Rotterdam, and University of Birmingham. He is on the Editorial Board of the International Journal of Environmental Studies (UK). As Commissioner (Planning) of Delhi Development Authority (DDA), he worked on the Master Plan for Delhi 2021, National Urban Housing and Habitat Policy (2007) and National Urban Transport Policy (2006). He is a visiting faculty at Delhi School of Planning and Architecture, New Delhi. He has to his credit many books including Space for Shopping: Planning and Design for Trade and Commerce, Urban Housing and Slums, and Urban Land Policy and Public-Private Partnership for Real Estate & Infrastructure Projects.
