Description

A vibrant genre since the dawn of cinema, the horror film is now going through a crisis. Since the turn of the Millennium, Hollywood seems to have run out of ideas, and has seen an increasingly desperate rummaging in the past to re-make its horror heritage. The great directors who created modern horror (Sam Raimi, Wes Craven, John Carpenter, George A Romero, and William Friedkin) have either moved onto other genres, or have looked a shadow of their former selves with their new works. Freddy, Jason and the Video Nasties have all been re-booted, but to little creative excitement.
Hollywood has either looked to the Far East to re-make and sanitise the works of Japanese and Korean horror innovators, or look back to the Eighties for its (lack of) inspiration. Even the Undead have been forced into making a comeback. With torture porn and extreme horror also now looking tired (Saw 23, anyone?), can a new generation of European film-makers and low budget digital production opportunities force re-invigoration of the genre. It is now time to ask 'where next for horror'?
