It began with an excruciating headache that lasted a whole week. Painkillers didn’t help. Nothing did. When the pain finally stopped, the noise started. It was just a small buzzing sound at first, but with each passing hour it got louder. A week later, the noise in Wes' head was so overpowering that normal concentration was virtually impossible.
When Wes stepped into a hospital X-ray room and the technician shut the door, the noise stopped instantly. It was then that he discovered he could hear the technicians thoughts. Not only thoughts, but each time her brain commanded a body part to move, even something as small as a finger, he heard a whisper-like sound in his head.
When he realized the room was shielded with lead to contain the X-ray radiation, it became clear--the noise is his head was the thoughts and brain activity of every person within a three mile radius. Knowing full well he couldn’t tell anyone what was happening to him, Wes walked out of the hospital--then walked away from his career. Now, peace comes from living in seclusion, and being alone changes you. Wes feels cursed, and has no idea if what's happened to him is a freak occurrence or something else.
In Wes' case, the key to Pandora’s box is a simple off-handed thought. Finding the truth will force him to open doors his mind, and his heart, closed long ago.
