What happens when an idealistic woman comes face-to-face with the hypocrisy in our judicial system and is then drummed out of the business and forced to hide in another country?
This is the true story of how Barbara Johnson metamorphosed from a female ruled by her groin into one ruled by her head, and became enabled to define goals that have made her life worthwhile.
While practicing law, she learned what was happening behind closed judicial and congressional doors. For example, mothers are terrorized when the government kidnaps their children and puts them into foster care. Grandparents are tormented by the courts divorcing the grandkids from grandma and grandpa. Fathers are angry because they are called deadbeat dads when, in fact, they are beatdead dads. As husbands or live-in lovers or one-night stands, they are not allowed father-son or father-daughter relationships with their kids. And thousands of children across our nation, daily, suffer parentectomies . . . as well as familectomies.
Challenging the judiciary for more than a decade, she ended up in jail twice. Ultimately, fired up, she ran for governor. She wanted to make judges accountable for their behavior as we are for ours. Her primary opponent in the 2002 race was Mitt Romney. Caveat: Romney, too, knew of the problems and intentionally did nothing.
Shortly after the election, political retaliation—which the high court had camouflaged during the gubernatorial race—began. She was to be disbarred for criticizing black-robed circus barkers and running on a platform to make the public aware of the need for court reform and the abolition of judicial immunity.
During a helluva 3½-year fight about the court’s proposed discipline of her, she fought not only for her right to criticize the judges when she sees wrongdoing, but also argued that it is her obligation to do so.
In retaliation, the judiciary, wanting to quiet or force her out of Massachusetts, bizarrely evicted her from her residence. Unwilling to face defeat, she wrote a whistleblowing book and choosing not to live in her car, moved to Costa Rica, where she’d be safe from further harm.
Exactly a month after she escaped the revengeful courts, Behind the Black Robes: Failed Justice was published, and with her right to free speech restored, she’s not stopped advocating for a change of the U.S. justice system, albeit from afar.
In this tumultuous election season, none of the current contenders for chief of our nation is addressing the tragic issues the people are facing. Hypocrisy and intentional blindness reigns. Jump in. Join the fight. Speak out so everyone can hear you.
