It's business as usual for Lisa Beth Callahan, casual witch and proprietor of the Gothic Renaissance occult shop in Greenwich Village...until she purchases an antique grimoire from a shady customer, and the door is thrown open to a world of secret societies and dark machinations.

A mysterious stranger claiming ownership of the grimoire lays a curse upon the shop that nearly kills Lisa. Ian Kenley, a foreign academic seeking the artifact for research, secretively provides her with information and a warning: the book is older and more valuable than she'd suspected, and the order from which it had been stolen will stop at nothing to reclaim it.

Lisa and her dangerous girlfriend Kat resist the order's attempt to take the grimoire by force, but it inexplicably vanishes. With Professor Kenley's help, they attempt to track down the priceless artifact. Their investigation eventually leads to an abandoned subway tunnel in the East Village rumored to be inhabited by a cult of necromancers.
