Description

The Activist's Guide to Changing the World for VISTA Volunteers series of books were written to guide VISTA (Volunteers In Service To America) as they fight poverty issues in projects all across America. The first in the Series, 'How to Create a Successful and Sustanable Project' is a must-read for any new VISTA Volunteer or Americorps members who's just finished their PSO. This book walks you through the basics... How to find cheap - or free - housing, what you need to know about applying for benefits (something you should do BEFORE you go to PSO), eating well on less than $50 a week, how to find cheap transportation, and tips for getting out and enjoying life - even on a tight budget. The book then goes on to help you learn about your new community, the steps you need to take to get the word out about who you are and how your project is helping people in the community... It also helps you hit the ground running by getting organized so that your project runs smoothly. The Activist Guide books are written by Cheryl Antier, a former VISTA leader who served three terms of service. Antier was responsible for 14 VISTA volunteers, and provided them with the tools, resources and training they needed to create successful and sustainable projects all across the state of Utah. Her own project - a teen volunteer project, composed of teens in two rural counties, won the Govenor's Silver Bowl Award for volunteer excellence in it's first year. Inside the book are links to other resources, including downloadable workbooks, along with articles, videos and other resources to help you create a successful and sustainable project.
