How John learnt to respect girls, and Jane found her true vocation. He learns by his first experience, where he goes too far, but as a result learns to respect his nurse. In a further trial, John has a further lesson in proper behaviour, and learns to accept his deserts in a suitably submissive manner. On a country holiday, John takes a walking holiday, meets a landlady who shows him what domestic discipline truly involves; then he meets some bad weather which results in an unexpected encounter, and some surprising results. Now in service, Jane finds her true vocation, and enters service where she will have to perform to the utmost of her ability. Jane, now in a regular job takes pains to learn her new tasks, but finds that even so, trouble from the past can still appear to subject her to a severe ordeal. Jane is persuaded to neglect her duties, but finds that the penalties can be very severe, on Punishment Day. Jane and Christine go for a walk in the rain to visit a neighbour, and get a very warm welcome. The last day of the holiday brings a strange reversal of roles, but in the end Jane finds that she still has to accept the consequences of her position, and bend to the force of circumstance.
