This book is one of a series of volumes written by Associates of the Royal School of Mines, and edited by Professor Boberts-A usten. It is not a merely elementary text-book on the one hand, or an exhaustive treatise on the other; nor does it cover the syllabus of any examining board. It is primarily intended for persons who are connected with the manufacture of iron and steely and who may, therefore, be assumed to have already some general knowledge of the subjts discussed. At the same time, it is hoped that, with the growing importance of scientific and technical instruction in a modem liberal education, such a volume as the present may not be without interest to others than those for whom it was specially prepared. The history of the manufacture of iron and steel is treated more fully than is usual in metallurgical treatises. It was thought that a brief history of the subject would not merely be of considtbble educational value, but would assist the student in learning certain metallurgical tsyda in an interesting manner; and, while showing the steps by which modem achievements have been accomplished, would indicate to the would-be inventor some of the paths which have been already travelled.
