Description

Universities of Cambridge (W estminster College) and Durham, atM anchester Cathedral, and at many other places, during the last two years, under the auspices of the Trustees of the James Long Lectureship Fund in connexion with the C.M.S. I gladly embrace this opportunity of acknowledging the kindness with which my attempt to show what the main features of Buddhism in its original form were has been everywhere received. It will be observed that I have throughout dealt with Buddhism at its best that is, with the doctrines taught by Buddha himself, and not with the corrupt forms of Buddhism now found inT ibet, Mongolia, China, Japan, and other lands. To deal with these latter at all satisfactorily would have enlarged the book to many times its present size, and would have tended to distract the readers attention from the original and purest form of the philosophy which I have tried to explain. It would be difiS cult to find anything to say in favour of these corrupt forms of Buddhism, and to deal with them thoroughly would require far more learning than I possess.
