After leaving Dr. Warren he made all necessary arrangements for his eventful ride—“that memorable ride, not only the most brilliant but the most important single exploit in our nation’s annalsâ€â€”with his “cry of alarm†which went “to every Middlesex village and farm.†He called upon his friend, Robert Newman, the sexton, and desired him to make the signals. Then to his home in North Square, took his boots and surtout [overcoat], went to one of the wharves at the North End, where he kept his boat, and was rowed across Charles River by two friends, one of whom was Joshua Bentley, “a little to the eastward, where the ‘Somerset’ man-of-war lay. It was then young flood, the ship was winding, and the moon was rising. They landed me on the Charlestown side.â€
