Description

A ssiNT is tbe nltimate appropriation or assimilation of tmth by the mind, and the object of theE ssay is to show what are the legitimate conditions on which this Assent is to be given. The name Grammar serves to remind ns that theE ssay does not propose itself as a metaphysical treatise, althongh its subject is psychological, and this is why it purposely avoids reference to any of the schools of metaphysics. It is as little specnlative in its inquiries as possible, and avoids appealing to any authoriy except that of each ones actual experience, because its aim is entirely practical. It is written in opposition to the infidel phlosopher of the day, who ignores all the anthority and traditions of the past, and who adopts the dangerous error that logical demonstration is the one test of truth. The Essay consists of two parts five chapters in each part and the fifth chapter in each part is an application to revealed religion of the principles educed in the preceding chapters.
