Description

Wqs PREFACE THIS work supplements in some important particulars the story of the rise of British influence in Asia told in Early English Adventurers in the East. In that volume, in tracing the course of events in Western I ndia, I carried the narrative no further than the occupation of Bombay. Here I deal with the half-century which followed Gerald A ungier ssuccessful administration of the island after its transfer from the Crown to the East India Company. It was not a period upon which we can look back with satisfaction. I ndeed, it may be regarded as the dark age of A nglo-I ndian history an era in which the British name and prestige were degraded to a lower level than was ever reached in that region either before or since.
