In that volume, in tracing the course of events in Western I ndia, I carried the narrative no further than the occupation of Bombay. Here I deal with the half-century which followed Gerald A ungier ssuccessful administration of the island after its transfer from the Crown to the East India Company. It was not a period upon which we can look back with satisfaction. I ndeed, it may be regarded as the dark age of A nglo-I ndian history an era in which the British name and prestige were degraded to a lower level than was ever reached in that region either before or since.
