This fence was in that country of low mountains and rolling land which lies along the eastern base of the Virginia Blue Bidge. The air was warm, but not too warm; and the man liked warm air. The sky was dear and blue without a cloud; and there was something in the heart of the man which made him love a sky like this. He wore a wide straw hat ragged at the edges; his shirt was coarse and indicated the color of the soil; and his trousers of brown cotton cloth were tucked into the tops of a pair of heavy, wellworn boots. He was a i oor man, and had very little in this world except a wife and four daughters. But the air was warm and the sky was blue, and he was happy. A nd, to add to his happiness, there came to him the smell of grapes. The three things that he loved in this world, next best to his wife and daughters, were warm air, blue sky, and the smell of grai es.
