Description

Based on choice versions, con/texts, and readings of Francisco Balagtas's epic romance Florante and Laura, Paculan strove to find, consolidate, and create what he calls Balagtas's "original work," two hundred years since the poet penned the epic. Paculan decided to retain the original title, footnotes, even the mistakes and typos committed by Balagtas, all in aid of showing the reader what could be the poet's truest, unadulterated intentions and message, as much as possible using the poet's own words, or words closest to what the poet intended to use and say. This is also Paculan's affirmation of Balagtas's edict, echoing through the history of Philippine poetry these two hundred years: "do not (…) vary the verse."
