Imagine going to bed as you do every night only waking up the next day in your 8-year old body with all the memories and knowledge you have today. The date is also accurate for your age. You’re back in your own past. You’ve got homework due. Your parents are young again. You’re attending the school you attended as a kid. What would you do differently? Would you make the same mistakes or would you be smarter the second time around? You’ve always thought this scenario would be ideal, but now you’re not so sure. This is Dale Elliot’s predicament.
As an adult Dale had often been known to say, “…if I only knew then what I know now.†And as many of us have also dreamed, Dale gets the chance to relive his life knowing exactly what’s going to happen. There’s only one problem. Julie. Dale believes Julie Beaumont is the woman of his dreams. Julie is the last person he spoke to before waking up in his 8-year old body. She’s a new member of a club she and Dale have been attending. Dale’s had a crush on her since her first meeting. He’s certain that she’s the one. He finally gets a chance to ask her out. And she graciously accepts.
Dale goes to bed that night feeling on top of the world. But he wakes up and it’s 1963. He’s a boy in the third grade. He’s confused but works his way through it. He realizes he’s somehow back in his own past with all of his adult memories. It’s almost perfect. He can relive his life and optimize his every move for success.
But none of it’s as exciting as he’d imagined it might have been because his ideal mate is an adult somewhere in the future. But life must go on and Dale soon forgets Julie as his priorities turn to being the best 8-year old boy he can be. After resigning himself to “do it all over again†and spending nearly four years reliving his past (without the mistakes and much more glory) he stumbles upon a way to get back to his adult life. The key to his return? A bundle of comic books found at a church rummage sale. Driven by love and with new hope of getting back to Julie, Dale and the cast of supporting characters in this compelling story explore hidden facets of the human mind, dreams, time travel, health, wealth and romance in this thought provoking and touching tale.
Dale discovers that others have also done what he has. He actually meets with two of them, one in the past and one in his adult timeline, a timeline where Julie, along with others are mysteriously absent. Could it be that Dale somehow changed the course of time as a man in his boy’s body? How will he know? It’s not exactly something he can discuss with his peers.
He manages to get back to the present and meets another time traveler, Jay Finnegan. Finnegan appears to be an insensitive opportunist who lives for what he refers to as time jumping. He has no allegiance to anyone but himself. Will he help Dale for the sake of love?
And then there’s professor T. Edward Brummer, a renowned physicist who mysteriously disappeared from his professional circle of peers so long ago. What was his motivation? Whispers among his associates hinted that Brummer had gone mad after a serious illness. Was it madness or did he find another, more exciting way to spend his time?
The Time Traveler’s Guide To Health, Wealth & Romance will make you laugh and perhaps also make you cry. In no way is it a typical time travel story. You’ll find yourself rooting for the hero as his relentless efforts to reunite with Julie introduce him to concepts and practices beyond his wildest dreams. Will he prevail? Time will tell. Oh, you’re going to love the time travel mechanism. You might even want to give it a try yourself.
