Description

When Simone Lavoie, newly arrived in Paris, is drawn back in time to 1925, she soon grasps that there’s a purpose to it. But what is that purpose and how must she fulfill it? And what does the most famous photographer of the era, Eugène Atget, and his ancient camera have to do with it?
In finding the answers, Simone meets up with such famous people as Gertrude Stein, Alice B. Toklas, Atget, Hemingway, Picasso, Zelda Fitzgerald and the exquisite Natalie Clifford Barney, Paris' foremost lesbian. She also enters into a passionate affair with irresistible teenager Josephine Baker, just off the boat from America and soon to take Paris by storm.
Illuminated by brilliant character portrayals, a fascinating story begins to play out in the world’s most beautiful city. A prime motivation for Simone is that a book by Alice B. Toklas (not written as yet, in 1925) will come to play a role in her husband's death in the present day. Perhaps, she reasons, if she can eliminate Alice, her husband’s death might yet be avoided, but does she dare try to arrange it?
Back in the present day, Simone finds work on a magazine and begins a tender love affair with her co-worker Gabe. He becomes her biggest supporter in her time-traveling exploits and even helps her redeem the reputation of the sexy Frenchman she works with, in 1925 Montparnasse – a man who is unfairly labeled a traitor of the Great War.
And all along, Simone is unaware that she is being stalked in the present day.
In this romantic adventure that blends murder, erotica, mystery, love and humour, you will travel the cobblestone streets of old Paris with Atget, stop by the exciting literary salons of Stein and Barney, visit places like Montmartre and Père Lachaise, and join Simone in her passionate affairs with men and women, as she lives wildly in those heady, faraway days.
Yes, Simone will change history and solve many mysteries, such as why Alice’s autobiography came to be written by Gertrude, how Paris beat the odds to survive destruction in 1944, and why things turned out the way they did in the true-life story of German army officer Otto Kayser, humanist and philosopher.
If you enjoyed the Woody Allen movie, "Midnight in Paris," you'll love the atmosphere of "Twice Dead," while finding it much richer in substance, sub-plots, characters and twists. Maybe you’ll need to keep the Kleenex handy, too! Superbly researched and beautifully written, the book even contains a brief biography of its most important real-life characters.“Twice Dead in Paris” is the sequel to the novella, "A Fresh Start in Paris," first published in November, 2012. You don't have to read “Fresh Start” first (or even after), but it's good and easy and details the tragedy behind Simone’s move to Paris and her first taste of time-travel.
