Hannibal Barca was the leader of the Carthaginian forces which fought against Rome during the Second Punic War, and was considered to have been Rome's greatest enemy.
After early successes in Spain, Hannibal led his army across the Alps, into Italy and achieved a series of military victories. Perhaps his greatest success came at the battle of Cannae in 216 BC.
Finally, recalled to North Africa, to defend his home city, Hannibal lost the battle of Zama, in 202 BC.
After the end of the Second Punic War, Hannibal left North Africa for Asia Minor where he continued his life-long struggle against Rome, by leading the armies of eastern rulers.
However, the Romans pursued him relentlessly, and rather than be captured alive, Hannibal committed suicide by taking poison.
In any discussion of the ‘Greatest Generals,’ Hannibal’s name is inevitably at the forefront, and in any list, he justifiably merits a position within the top five.
