INTERESTING FACTS:
§ Sargent was an American citizen from birth, but had never been in the United States until just before his 21st birthday in order to retain his citizenship.
§ He studied at the Accademia delle Belle Arti in Florence, under Emile-Auguste Carolus-Duran and the Ecole des Beaux-Arts in Paris.
§ Unlike his other commissions, Sargent sought out Madame Gautreau for the portrait, Madame X. This painting brought him negative criticism that cost him commissions.
§ He was an extremely gifted artist, having mastered impressionism, classical portraiture, landscapes, watercolor, murals and music.
