The advancement of renewable technologies, both in terms of growth and the various technologies involved means that the ‘traditional’ UK gas installer needs to diversify and broaden their skill set to meet the needs of future customers’ and to maximise the opportunities these technologies present.
The technology itself, the way it collects and uses natural energy is diverse, but their underlying principles are not complex and therefore should hold no fear for the ‘traditional’ gas installer.
The aim of this manual is to provide information to UK gas engineers (and others who may be interested in the subject) on one specific renewable technology – solar thermal systems – which utilises solar energy to meet the hot water and in some cases, heating needs of customers’.
Solar thermal systems are designed and installed as an integrated energy system that takes the primary role in meeting the customer’s needs but also defers to more traditional forms of energy (gas, oil, etc) as a back-up heat source when conditions or load dictates their use.
The manual is not intended to replace the need for formal training and assessment which is paramount to ensure systems are reliable, efficient and safe but rather serves as an introduction to the technology and its principles.
