Although I have been coaching and mentoring young and old, technical and professional, employees, peers and managers for two decades, I only learned these 4 POWERFUL STEPS halfway through that time. I have studied engineering, commerce and theology. I have worked in leadership development and ministry. I have hired hundreds of people into organizations. And still I find these 4 steps to be powerful – 4 simple steps any of us can learn.
We have all wanted to impact peoples’ lives for the good, and yet we find ourselves frustrated by our apparent lack of success. We would like to have such an impact for their good and maybe our own satisfaction and sense of significance. So what gets in the way? Is it our own broken or defective view of the world that then affects our ability to guide others? Is it our tendency to try and teach our way instead of allowing others find their own? Is it easier to tell and not sell (direction instead of discovery)?
Well, I would argue it is all of these things and more. We have lost the ability to listen, and we have forgotten what it is to be listened to. Everyone is too busy and rushed and stressed to have the time to stop and ask someone what they think. What they want to do. What their challenge is. What they dream of. Where they are stuck. So, we tell. We talk. We instruct. We direct. But we do not listen, question, probe or show interest. Not genuinely and sincerely at least.
