Description

Samuel Griswold Goodrich (1793 – 1860), alias ‘Peter Parley’, was the son of a clergyman, as well as a soldier, bookseller, publisher, and author. He was elected to the Massachusetts House of Representatives, then the State Senate, before moving to Paris, France as the American Consulate.
In 1828, Goodrich produced ‘The Token’, an annual publication which he continued for 15 years. It contained contributions from such noteworthy writers of that era as Nathaniel Hawthorne and Henry Wadsworth Longfellow. It was in ‘The Token’ that Goodrich began to publish his ‘Peter Parley’ books.
‘Faggots for the Fireside, Tales of Fact and Fancy’, contains two ‘novella’s’, eight short stories, and ends with ‘Songs of the Season’, which are 12 short poems paying homage to each month in the year. In many of ‘Peter Parley’s’ stories, the author charmingly tells his tale as though he were speaking directly to the reader. Some impart information; some contain a moral; and others simply entertain, but each is well written, interesting, and appealingly told.
