Over the years I have found many new cases of lung cancer. Some people show up with symptoms that are sudden and others that have physical complaints of days, weeks, months or years. They present with a variety of complaints. Sometimes I find new cases of cancer in ER as incident findings: chest injury, weakness, fever workup, work up of weight loss. Others are not subtle: coughing up blood with weight loss. This is TB or cancer until proven otherwise.
I find different stages of lung cancer. Some lung cancers are so small that they could be presumed to be non specific or unknown changes on chest x-ray. I usually order a CT scan of the chest, not just to get an idea if the changes are due to cancer, also to check for spread of the disease or better evaluate its extent.
A medical disease called “Valley Fever†can cause a round lesion mass on a chest x-ray that looks like cancer, so a biopsy is needed to confirm the diagnosis.
Sometimes I find lung cancer when it has spread to other parts of the body causing symptoms that are not lung or breathing related. This is usually stage IV cancer, unless there is a second kind of cancer found, like in the case of my step brother who had both cancers and he was under 45 years of age.
There are Proactive Steps to fight cancer which are contained in the chapters of this book. They include prevention, intervention, proactive methods for cancer risk reduction, and promotion of prostate health.
We are now learning that more and more of what we do on a daily basis, and what we are exposed to can affect our health and even be passed on to our offspring and our children’s children via epigenetic factors. We are also learning about the value of health maintenance and the power of taking proactive and preventative steps despite genetic predispositions to diseases like lung cancer.
They are addressed in the following four groups:
1. Early Detection, as well as Diagnostic Vigilance:
During my presentations to institutions, hospitals, and medical leaders in the field of prostate cancer in the US, India, Mexico, and most recently, at the International Cancer Expo and Forum 2010 in South Korea, I recommended a new panel of tests as a screening tool for all men age 40, with or without risk factors.
There are new technologies being developed for cancer detection and treatment.
2. Good Chemistry for the Body with Nutritional support (and what to avoid)
We can all take daily actions to reduce risk of getting cancer through the use of healthy, “functional†foods, as well as avoidance of harmful substances in our diets. The use of organic, chemical-free foods is highest on my list of good first choices. Watch out for processed foods with artificial chemicals, hormones, additives, and pesticides. Certain methods of food processing may increase cancer risk.
Lung cancer
Lung cancer is a disease characterized by uncontrolled cell growth in tissues of the lung. If left untreated, this growth can spread beyond the lung in a process called metastasis into nearby tissue and, eventually, into other parts of the body.
