Description

Giving an account of the Culdees, or "ceile dé," the "Servants of God" - an ascetic sect of monks and hermits who established communities across Ireland, Scotland and England in the Middle Ages. Jamieson discusses their possible origins, along with the history of their growth, evolution and eventual suppression after the invasion of the Normans.

First published in 1811 this important volume soon became scarce due to popular demand. Reissued in 1890 in this "popular edition," this version omits the largely Latin footnotes and appendix, leaving the body of the text intact.
