I heard gunshots and the wolves around me ran off with a sense of purpose. I followed from a distance, but in my human form it took a little longer to reach the origin of the gunshots.
Peeking through the branches, I saw the hunters in the fight for their lives. They had come across the lair before the wolves had a chance to change to their human form. The hunter’s guns were of no use and they had decided to fight in hand-to-hand combat. It wasn’t a pretty sight. The wolves would corral a hunter into a corner and once they did, they tear him apart, then they would turn their snarling lips to another. The smell of the hunters fear lingered in the air and the wolves were feeding on it in a ravenous manner.
It took everything I had to stop myself from running out and joining the wolves in battle. It was over before it even began. The hunters had overplayed their hands and the wolves were no longer the prey. I could see now, that they had waited till the time was right and led the hunters into a trap of their own making. These beasts were smarter than anything that they’ve ever come across before.
The wolves left all but one dead, and slowly gravitated back to their lair. I walked out into the open to find Kirk almost at death’s door. One arm was torn out and the blood gushed out of him. His face was pale and his life was fading away. I kneeled down on the ground and lifted his head.
