“Some say that every great truth is painfully revealed. Perhaps this is so, perhaps not. All I can say is that, at least in my case, it didn’t happen that way. If the Truth was ever revealed to me, it happened one morning, when I was at home and about to hang out the washing on my balcony. Back then, it wasn’t the least bit painful, but rather surprising and reassuring, like bumping into an old friend in a foreign city.â€
Every town keeps secrets. Stored up for generations, they grow like moss in dark corners: in the damp cellars of houses or locked rooms and in awkward silences. These secrets are sometimes banal and sometimes terrible, but they are always present in a small community where everything is known but nobody knows anything.
In 1961, Rogelio Villanueva, who had been missing for more than twenty years, returned to his hometown to take over the family business. In 1967, he was found in his bath, having bled to death. There was a note with a cryptic message in the sink and he had two unusual purple discolorations under his chin.
'Long Rainy Nights' is the story of a crime which is just the climax to a chain of past crimes. It’s a tale about how the most terrible secrets of a town were cooked up and left to simmer. But, above all, it’s a story about a father’s love for his daughter and the lengths he will go to for it.
