In a quest to atone for murder, Jack Winter races to discover why he cannot remember his past. As he learns that he is not a man, but a perfect machine programmed to kill, he also learns that something happened to him as he snuffed out the life of his last victim, Judge Franklin. Now the soul of the judge seems to speak to him as he struggles to find those that orchestrate murder. He leaves a trail of destruction avoiding the police, the FBI, and an army of perfect people, like him, as he searches for answers, but each answer seems to breed more questions. As Jack and his unexpected allies, Kara the seductress, who is like him, and Mark and Eve the police investigators, find the truth behind the murders, they also find more than anyone bargained for as they must travel 200 years in the future.
CHAPTER 1 (Sample)
Court
I was downtown in the heart of Los Angeles, or as the locals like to say, “LA.†The skyline, blanketed in a shroud of smog, diminished the beauty of the eighty degree day. I had just pulled into the dingy, cement-gray parking garage for the LA County Courthouse. I was close to where the plan said that it was to happen, inside the courthouse. My mind registered that I had arrived, but I had been deep in thought during the trip. I had driven as if I had been set on auto-pilot. My orders dominated my awareness. I couldn’t stop questioning why I felt compelled to follow any instruction I was given. Something from deep in my subconscious screamed at me to do whatever my handlers said. Because of that, I did as I was ordered, but I questioned why I allow them to tell me what to do, and then blindly follow what they said. Besides my orders, I was analyzing the other things they told me. They said that I was special. I knew that when people said you were special, they really meant that you were different. I knew that mothers told their children that they were special, but in reality, the kid could be an ugly retarded moron. I didn’t remember much about my mother. I wondered if the ones that said I was special were impartial. I suspected that they were biased, like mothers, because they had an agenda and were the benefactors of my actions.
The people that told me what to do had sent me to complete a task that was simple, but had risks. They said it was a test although they hadn’t explained what aspect of the task was to be the test. They had explained the risks. I could be apprehended for what I was going to do, and that was unacceptable. They said that I was not to be caught under any circumstances. Tall orders from those that were not directly involved, but I felt confident. I had been given instruction in many things including how to proceed with my current task, and I would dutifully carry it through. I was special. I was going to commit murder.
