Description

Tom's bare feet slapped against the tar roof as he landed on top of the apartment building, anti-vandal paint sticking to his soles. As he skidded to a stop, he noticed someone else on the roof. A man in a gas mask, with his back to Tom, was spray painting a large tomahawk onto the side wall of the roofs entrance door. Behind it was a mural of the City. In front of the tomahawks blade the City was dark, blurry and dreary. But behind the blade, where it had already cut, the City was bright, joyful, vivid. Tom walked up and stood beside the man. He noticed the man was putting finishing touches to a feather that was floating in front of a vibrant moon on the dark side of the City.
"That's amazing." Tom said. The artist jumped, startled. He turned around quickly. His eyes fell upon Tom's mask. He looked Tom up and down, taking it all in. His mouth slowly fell open, his eyes the perfect picture of shock and awe. "Why is the feather falling past the moon?" Tom asked.
"To suggest that you're up there, watching over us, unseen." The man said clearly, despite his mouth still gaping. "Is it really you?" Tom made a show of touching himself, checking if it was.
"I think so. I hope so." Tom said.
"What are you doing here? Are there bad guys here?"
"I think so. At the very least there's injustice." Tom took a deep breath. "I really like this. You should submit it toTom Baker, he does my comic book."
"I know. I'm a big fan. Of the book… and of you." The man said sincerely. "Can I ask… Who came first? The character, or you?"
"It doesn't matter. When it really comes down to it, who cares why the sun rises…" Tom looked at the mural and beamed with pride. "As long as it does." Tom plucked a feather off of his top and handed it to the artist, then he left through the door. The man finished the mural. When he was done, it was surrounded by the words 'The sun will rise, who are we to ask why'.
