Who gets up in the morning saying, “I hope my life will be meaningless today”?
I believe that we all want our lives to matter. We see others whose lives really seem to be worthwhile, but fear that we will end up part of the faceless crowd. We have been told that God made us for a reason; but maybe we have given Him some reason to write us off. Maybe He is just too busy with His star recruits.
I am writing this book as much as anything to help us be aware of the lies that have made their way into our thinking that keep us from really living in line with God’s promises to us. He really meant it when He promised a life that would matter to those who would trust Him. For if our lives make a real difference, the rest of creation can have the opportunity to see our Creator through us. The best human expression of the Divine was Christ. But we are all capable of it. We are all called to it. But even if we truly believe that, what should “it” look like? That gets complicated. The world around us will confidently and continuously define our role for us if we allow it. When we allow that, our perspective becomes distorted and clouded and we become discouraged. We need to look past the creation into the eyes of our Creator.
What will we see if we do? I think we will find, among other things, that He loves His hand-made pots -- each uniquely beautiful and suited to a multitude of different uses that will reflect both His and our particular characteristics. But He loves them mostly because they are His.
Through this book, I want to encourage believers to develop an attitude in which they, as the clay, put away all preconditions and preconceptions (and misconceptions) about what the Potter can and should do with them. I call this the All-Means Attitude. This is not just about finding God’s will for our future, it is also about finding joy, peace, and fulfillment in it. It is also not a book to enable selfaholics. God’s will is NOT ultimately about you – or me. It is about a Savior whose example is the ultimate in selflessness.
