Description

Michael Leonard, a worn out ex-journalist with mental health problems is taking time out to recover. Living alone above a noisy High Street in Hackney during the coldest winter of his lifetime, he hears that an old friend, Sammy Maclean, has become homeless and sets out to track him down.
Sammy pops up one lonely late December evening after an unexplained six year absence. What the two friends discuss has serious repercussions.
Michael is drawn by chance into polar opposite worlds, inhabited by two old comrades in arms from the British Army and the first Gulf War. One is Sammy Maclean, voluntary worker and devotee to the wretched of the earth; the other is Andrew Hollingbone MP - wealthy, powerful and a rising star in the British government with a big secret to hide.
Michael knows both men from his past life, but he cannot begin to realise the connections between them until the events of the following year unfold.
Moving from the mean streets of East London to the privilege and influence of Westminster; from the homeless and dispossessed to those who wield true power, Michael’s journey takes him across a crowded, segregated city of different and unequal communities. He is accompanied along the way by a constant battle to overcome his anger. Confronted by fears and prejudices, his attempts to regain stability are offset by the complexities and provocations of a multicultural city.
Corruption, conspiracy and mayhem are set against the background of the Arab Spring and the London riots. From Dar Alyatama, the orphanage in Morocco where Sammy has given over his life to help others, to the opulence and corruption of Dubai and Saudi Arabia; from men living in cardboard boxes, to mansion flats of MPs paid for by the pubic: the story moves through different versions of modern Britain and illustrates how easy it is for anyone to fall through the cracks from one world to the other.
Hollingbone’s good fortune turns sour as the year plays out and Sammy Maclean arrives for a final reckoning. In the aftermath of the old soldiers’ last meeting, the odds are raised and the pressure increased to breaking point as civilisation falls apart during the London riots.
As Michael struggles to maintain his mental health, the real madness of others is laid bare alongside illegal arms dealing and terrorist atrocities in the Middle East. Danger threatens all who know the truth. As Michael puts the pieces together, he too must face true insanity and survive.
