The first short story in the Penny Plain Mysteries by Jan Jones
Things just haven’t been going right for Penny Plain. She’s recently divorced, and she feels stuck in a rut … a comfortable one, mind you!
As a long-time resident of the Lake District coastal town of Salthaven, old memories are stirred up when Penny’s mother passes away and Penny is left to despondently clear out a lifetime’s worth of possessions. Among her mother’s nick-nacks, she finds an old family photo that has been made into a strange jigsaw puzzle. Penny thinks nothing more of it until she goes to the local bazaar … and finds another one. Where are these oddly-shaped jigsaws coming from?
Penny’s not the only one who senses a mystery around these old puzzles. New journalist in town, Leo Williams, seems strangely interested in them too … but why? Like the jigsaws, there is more to Leo than meets the eye, but it takes another sort of puzzle at a local art gallery to fit the pieces of his riddle together.
