Long before "The Secret" and the Law of Attraction craze, there was Neville Goddard (1905-1972). He taught that humans are powerful beings, able to create their own reality through the power of imagination. He was enormously popular and taught on both TV and the radio, while giving lectures in New York, San Francisco and Los Angeles.

For instance, he told a story about being a soldier in World War II and asking his CO for an early release and return to civilian life. His commander grumpily replied that Neville would get out on his official release date and not a moment sooner. So every night, as he rested in his army cot, Neville imagined being in his apartment in New York City. He imagined lying in his civilian bed, getting up and walking around the apartment, sitting in chairs, touching objects and looking out the window at familiar views. After 8 nights of this imaginative exercise, the CO called Neville to his office. He said he didn't understand it, but he had received an order to let him go and Neville left the army that very day.

All of Neville's teachings focus on how we can use our power like he did.
