A poorly designed website could hinder your business

Whilst browsing websites to purchase a product or a service, you may make the conscious or unconscious decision to or not to go ahead with the purchase and you may leave the site.

Unless you know the exact place you want to buy the product/service from, you will probably do a bit of online shopping, compare prices, make sure it’s in stock or available in your area and then you’ll either buy it then, come back later or go to the store to buy it.

Ads: Google vs Bing (Pay Per Click)

I wondered one day, how much market share does Google have. So I did a quick search and found out that it was around 90% of the search engine market with Bing coming in second.

Then I thought, well considering that Google Ads are quite expensive, surely Bing’s would be around 90% cheaper, so I did a test!

Naturally you would think that Google would be the best, because they have over 90% share of the search engine market. But does that mean they will bring you more visits than Bing?

Bing is beating Google for everything apart from click through rate, but this comes down to cost. If you pay a lot on Google, you will see results, but this tends to be for the big boys.

Facebook and Twitter ads are seen by a lot of people, but don’t really turn into visits.

Obviously the results would be different for every website, and each month, but this was just a quick test to show the major differences and that your thoughts that Google would bring the best results could be quite wrong. Although, it is still worthy of having a presence on Google, so don’t quickly move all of your money over to Bing. Create a marketing strategy, then trial and test it.

Are Pinterest ‘Pins’ worth more than Facebook ‘Likes’?

Pinterest has taken the web by storm in 2013.

Most users are even favouring the digital pinboard over popular social media channels, spending more time pinning than spent on Facebook. After researching for “pinteresting” blog topics, I came across a study which proved the growing impact of Pinterest in retail. Findings on the study were that Pinterest’s ‘Pin It’ button overtook Facebook’s Like button on the product page. It also revealed that engagement on Facebook brand pages was down 27%.

Responsive Web Design

What does responsive mean?

Having a responsive website means that your website will show differently on devices with different screen sizes. I.E. iPad, iPhone 4, iPhone 5, Galaxy S4 or BlackBerry Curve.

In simple terms, it’s mobile/tablet friendly.

Each of these devices has a different sized screen compared to a computer or a monitor, therefore the text wouldn’t fit on most of their screens, meaning the visitor would have to zoom in to read.

Compare a non-responsive site to a well developed, up-to-date website and you’ll see the benefits. Some users will opt to bounce away from a non-responsive site whilst on a portable device, just because of the need to zoom. Why struggle to read text when you could visit another site which has taken the effort to be responsive.

Late in 2013, we completely redesigned the Lustre Lingerie website. Changing every page, all of the layout and pretty much every single thing on the website.

The result was that is looks far better, it is easier to use for the customers and hopefully will increase website hits and sales.
However, the day we changed the website, this huge dip in visits happened:

How to get more visits from search engines

Most people with a website wonder how to get higher on search engine result pages, even the biggest of companies.
