This book, "Reflections in the New Country," is a collection of poetry written over a 40 year period, beginning in the late 1970’s when Judith Bailey resided in Ohio, her native state. A strong current of imagery runs through the poems as well as influence from favorite poets such as e.e. cummings and Stephen Crane. Other currents readers will find in the book are the author’s faith coupled with a skepticism of organized religion, a great love of the outdoors, wildlife and nature. Poems also reflect the author’s childhood years among the Amish of northern Ohio as well as farm-living and family history. The overall theme of the collection is based on the poem "(frontier)," which describes an 1800’s farmer turned mountain man who went west and found "A New Country," too beautiful to describe. The character is a type of Christ and reflects his struggles conveying the concepts of the Kingdom of God. The author relates, "This life that we see here on earth reflects the image of heaven like water reflects the trees, where heaven is a place more real and more wonderful than we could ever imagine."
