When you are not Morpheus or Han Solo life can be difficult. When you are Danny Walker, have a pronounced stutter and can't get a girlfriend life is virtually impossible. But all this changes when Danny meets and falls in love with Thalia Buchanan, a Deaf girl who works at the local college. Through Thalia's positive influence Danny is gradually weaned off his reliance on Hollywood inspired fantasy and pulled into a far more exciting reality.
Danny's journey however is not without its trials.
The first of these is his parents - Denise and Daniel Senior - under whose roof he is currently living. They seem to be permanently stuck in the 1950's and their idea of interior design would make Steptoe's yard look like a show home. It is their constant rows and social faux pas that have driven Danny to rely on an internal fantasy world in order to cope with his outwardly miserable life.
Danny's biggest problem of all though comes in the shape of his older brother Matthew, a self deluded ladies man who invariably comes packaged with the belligerently offensive Barry Wyton. Matthew's best friend since school, Barry is a small time drug dealer who fuels Matthew's many Saturday night peccadilloes with whatever drugs he happens to be pushing at the time. Danny doesn't like Barry and Barry definitely doesn't like Danny but when Barry decides to embark on the "deal of the century" the destructive shadow he casts over them all threatens to destroy not only Matthew's marriage but also Danny's one and only chance of true happiness.
