The nervous system is a thing of wonder. The human brain consists of about a hundred billion nerve cells, with many times that number of connections between them. Also, nerve cells can transmit impulses at speeds of up to a hundred metres/second: that's around two hundred miles an hour! Nerve cells are by far the largest cells in the body; some are up to one metre long.
This book is about the structure and function of the amazing nervous system. I believe it will help you get an understanding of the principles of nervous function; such as the transmission of the impulses and the co-ordination made possible by synaptic connections.
My hope is that you will enjoy the book and that it will give you insight not only into the nervous system but also encourage you to further study biology as a subject.
