What started out to be an exciting adventure for Richard Tarnowicz in discovering his roots in Poland, grows ever more confusing, exciting, and scary. As he plans for the trip he runs into some Polish people who immigrated to the USA. At the sound of his last name, they shake in fear or just get angry and dismiss him as though he is not worthy of their attention. Though frustrated by their reactions, he moves forward with his plans traveling through Germany to his final destination, Krakow. What he encounters along the way frightens and confuses him even more.
Once he reaches his destination, he learns that there are two sides to his family, 'the saints and the demon himself'. Slowly his image of his father changes as he learns more about what his father did during world war II, and he learns that his family is indeed complicated.
A good read with lots of action, mystery and fun.
This book is based on a true story, with a good amount of embellishment.
