Nazi Raider Pinguin: The Story of Cruiser HK-33

Nazi Raider Pinguin, first published in 1954 as Cruise of the Raider HK-33, was written by leading German naval correspondent H. J. Brennecke with the help from survivors of the HK-33. The Nazi Raider Pinguin is a gripping true tale of a little known aspect of World War Two—the use of converted freighters as fighting vessels. The German auxiliary cruiser (Hilfskreuzer) Pinguin was known to the Kriegsmarine as Schiff 33, and designated HSK 5, and termed Raider F by the British Royal Navy. Like a pirate, vanishing and reappearing, the Pinguin roamed the seas from New Zealand to the Indian Ocean and south to the waters of Antarctica in search of her quarry. At first posing as the Russian tanker Pechora, and later under other names and in various disguises, she destroyed many Allied ships. By the end of her career she had cost the Allies nearly 200,000 tons of shipping before succumbing to the more powerful British cruiser H.M.S. Cornwall in May 1941.
