Description

Grand Rapids, Mich. faced the worst flood the city had seen in 100 years. Basements of buildings along the Grand River were flooding. A secretary looked out the window of her office's employee lounge to see the water level was higher than her head.
Volunteers were desperately needed to fill sandbags, residents had to be evacuated or at the very least kept up to date.
There wasn't a minute to waste. The community had to be mobilized.
Grand Rapids officials disrupted their usual communications process. They went to the Internet. They went to Twitter.
City and civic leaders mobilized their community beginning with just one tweet.
An email to a local environmental group, a laptop to receive it, and the volunteer effort was underway. Hundreds of people responded to the first "sandbagging event" in Grand Rapids.
City and community leaders, unintentionally, used social media to derail the usual media mule train in Grand Rapids. The local newspaper, and TV and radio stations found out about the sandbagging effort my monitoring tweets and other social media messages.
City officials never had to send out a single press release.
They mobilized their community with just one tweet.
This article gives you insight into how they did it, and how you can do it in your community or business, too.
