Agent Grey: FSS: Highway 17 (Agent Carter, DHS World Book 6)

Zane Grey is a former Marine, now in his seventh year as a Foreign Service Specialist, working for the Department of State as a Diplomatic Security Agent. His successes at combating a Russian multinational crime organization have led to his entering the Witness Protection Program. His new life is just beginning to sort itself out when he inadvertently lands in the middle of an attack by a Chinese hit squad. He manages to extricate himself and the target, his scraggly, middle-aged Chinese gardener, along with the man's daughter. When he asks for help, the Marshal's Service claims it doesn't have jurisdiction and State doesn't have the resources but Zane is unable to turn his back on the two victims. He dips into his own money and tries to keep them alive. Inevitably, the Russians learn of his new identity and Zane finds himself running from both organizations and out of money. He loses some blood and his heart, but he also gains an ally, Agent Carter, of the Department of Homeland Security.
