No living white man is better qualified to discuss the mysteries and marvels of interior South America than Lieutenant-Colonel Fawcett. For more than nine years—prior to the outbreak of the great war—this intrepid and indefatigable searcher after scientific and archeological data has combed the country bounded by the Orinoco and Araguay rivers, the Cordilleras dc los Andes and the northern edge of the Argentine Republic. Twice he has headed expeditions into the mystic mountains, from which he was the sole survivor.
Lieutenant-Colonel Fawcett, who is now at the head of his artillery battery "somewhere in Flanders," has recently earned the Royal Geographic Society of London the explorers' gold medal, the blue ribbon of the Society, for which Livingstone and Scott gave up their lives. This medal was awarded because of the work which is described in this article.
In view of the fact that Colonel Fawcett hopes, should he emerge from the conflict in Europe without disabling wounds, to lead a scientific expedition into the South American wilds, in search of the lost city of the Chibchas, his locations—as given in this article—are more or less vague. He does not wish to have his nine years of work spoiled or vitiated by irresponsible seekers after loot or notoriety.
