The Cordoba Mosque

This scholarly work provides unique and comprehensive insight into the history, character and continued presence and impact of the Great Mosque of Cordoba, the former epicentre of Muslim Spain from the early 8th century. Charting the history of the Cordoba Mosque this work deals with the various phases and periods of the expansion and life of the Cordoba Mosque, using the physical remains of the mosque as a source of archaeological investigation together with historical sources. Detailed yet accessible study of the art and architecture (external in addition to internal) and significance of central role and function of the Cordoba Mosque is addressed as are a vast range of notable issues and subjects that enrich this study. Significantly the history of the Cordoba Mosque in the post-Umayyad period is also examined thereby taking the reader from the early Muslim period to the present day. Whilst dealing with a range of archaeological, art and architectural history and other themes in heritage in a comprehensive and scholarly manner, this work is written in an accessible manner and supported throughout with illustrations.

This work is written by a qualified specialist historian, archaeologist, historic landscape conservationist and educationalist. The writer has many years of experience of studies, including archaeological survey, of Cordoba and other areas of the history and heritage of Muslim Spain, including focus on interaction of Muslim Spain and other parts of Europe and the wider world.
