Harry, an inexperienced young man, is, because of his athletic ability, dominated by his mother's determination to see him in the Olympics. On the verge of entering university he is taken, unwillingly, with his parents to celebrate his 18th birthday on a nameless Greek island. He views this three week break with dismay, but his encounter with an older woman changes that. Laura, the older woman, is sympathetic with his shy and unpractised ways, and offers to guide him in being confident in the handling of women. From being dreaded, Harry's time on the island becomes an erotic dream. It ends with sad goodbyes, but much appreciation on Harry's part. At university, he and his room mate, Dan, set out to move themselves from amateur to professional ranks in womanising, a goal which is not wholly successful, but their respective studies are. Harry, from aiming for journalism.is talked into education. He does this for one year, but at the age of twenty two finds the lure of journalism too strong, and obtains a position on a London newspaper. However, his one year in school is to throw up repercussions affecting the rest of his life. His time in journalism goes well, as does his encounters with women, and he is able to share notes on successes with Dan. They both agree on 'no marriage before thirty'. But when Harry encounters a stunning young lady from his school experience he finds his emotions tangled. This is further complicated by a chance meeting with Laura, his mentor from the island. How he handles the situation is to set him on course for the rest of his life.

Consequently, she has led him through repressed teenage years. For his 18th birthday he is taken, unwilling, on a Greek island holiday with his parents. Dreading his time on this bare island he encounters a beautiful older lady, who, recognising his shyness, offers to school him in handling women before he enters university. A dreaded holiday becomes a sheer erotic delight, which ends with a sad separation. At university he and his room mate make a vow to pursue a many women as possible. This has limited success but they both have successful academic results. Harry tries one year in education, a decision which will have big results on his future. Then he goes for his main aim, journalism, with some success. And now he finds his pursuit of the opposite sex much more fruitful. He encounters a young woman, from his time in education and his whole outlook is gradually changed by her allure and his own womanising past. It is complicated by his island encounter coming back into his life.
