Elizabeth B. Custer offers a fascinating glimpse into garrison and camp life.
Tenting on the Plains, Or General Custer in Kansas and Texas (1895)
This is a first-hand history of the wife of General Custer in the year after the Civil War.
About The Author
Elizabeth Bacon Custer (1842–1933) was the wife of General George Armstrong Custer and she spent most of their marriage in close proximity to him (despite numerous military campaigns). After his death, she became an outspoken advocate for her husband's legacy through her popular books and lectures. Custer's iconic portrayal as the gallant fallen hero amid the glory of 'Custer's Last Stand' was a canon of American history for almost a century after his death.
