This story starts in 1950. Hannah Steiner an unmarried former farm girl from the Steppes of German North Dakota is pregnant and visits a doctor. The doctor upon learning that the father is black intimates to Hannah that he can terminate the pregnancy for her. She flees in tears and fear. Hannah marries the father of the child, but the marriage, is doomed. She later gives birth to a beautiful baby girl whom she names Patricia.

Pat is not accepted by anyone as she grows up in the inner city. In grade school the kids call her zebra, oreo, and inside out oreo, amongst other things. She is so smart she has trouble relating. In High School she is becomes so gorgeous boys want her for her body, and girls are jealous of her. She retreats into music and keeps to herself except for a single boy named Kevin. Kevin is blind to her heritage. Her hot and cold treatment of Kevin is a mystery that he can't get figure out.

Kevin just doesn't get it about Pat. He finally gives up on her in frustration. Uncle Sam as he did for so many youth of that era takes over his life and changes him. Suddenly they encounter each other again in 1977, and have a second chance at their romance. The story is more than a bwwm romance though. As Kevin struggles to get the relationship with Pat restored, he also tries to solve a decade old crime that happened during the race riots of the sixties. He asks a lot questions. He uses his contacts in the old neighborhood. He narrows down the suspects to those involved in drug dealing, narcotics and prostitution. It takes a couple of lucky breaks to open it up though. A shattered and discarded Vietnam Vet who was living in a dumpster during the riots finally supplies the missing evidence needed to solve the mystery.

What does the future hold for these two? Will romance prevail? Her decisions make for exciting urban romance and drama. Will the mysteries of Pat, her disappearing Dad, and the murder of a free lancing prostitute get solved?

The humor is plentiful, and often painful. The local Criminal element and the murderer himself did not let a crisis go to waste. They took the riots as an opportunity settle some old scores. This is a romance and mystery you will love.

Mike Sposs was a paperboy in the sixties with a route that went along Plymouth Avenue in North Minneapolis. The Avenue was torched by rioters and looters in the mid sixties. Mike loves the motown sound, jazz, and baroque music, he also sailed in the merchant marine. The story in Settling Old Scores is based loosely upon some historical, and some fictional characters and events.
