Description

Reflect for a moment on the following facts of life for women in the United States:

* Women are paid 73 cents for every dollar a man is paid
* Women, on average, receive fewer raises and fewer promotions than men
* Women are the primary caretakers of children and elderly parents
* Women’s value in society is based more on looks than on talent or intelligence
* Women face sexual harassment in the workplace in far greater numbers than men
* Women suffer from domestic violence in far greater numbers than men
* Women face the threat of rape or assault daily, and alter their lives accordingly
* One in three women will be sexually abused in their lifetime

To say that women have it harder than men is a gross understatement. They're paid less for the same work as their male counterparts, they sacrifice important aspects of their own lives to care for others, they're forced to walk a delicate line between maximizing their looks to maintain their perceived value to society and simultaneously fending off the sexual harassment such physical enhancements elicit, all while being told by random strangers on the street to “smile.”

The facts listed above have been significant contributors to the high incidence of depression and anxiety among women of all ages. The unfairness of the obstacles unique to women have made many sane women feel insane after years of struggling under the weight of these obstacles in what is supposed to be a free, fair and egalitarian society. These women were not sick, society was sick; but many ultimately lost their sanity in their attempts to adjust and conform to this sick society.

As individuals, we are limited in our ability to create major changes in society, but there are measures we can take to ensure that we remain sane and healthy despite, and in the midst of, all that is insane and unhealthy around us. Based on six years of research and the teachings of Jean-Paul Sartre, “Lost Women” identifies the 10 most identity-challenging events and situations that women confront throughout their lives, and provides solutions for staying centered. It is a chaotic world for women of all ages, and “Lost Women” serves as a road map to safety, serenity and sanity.
